Our In-Office Approach
Prioritizing team-based flexibility and moments that matter in our offices.
With more games, offices around the world, and projects being spun up, we’ve found a one-size-fits-all policy for in-office work doesn’t make sense for Riot. That’s why we explored a new approach.
What We Prioritize
Trust in Leaders
Individual leaders can make the call that works for their team—and are expected to lead by example.
Team-based Flexibility
Teams can scale in-office expectations up or down depending on the moment.
Moments That Matter
When Rioters are coming into the office, make sure it’s worth it.
We are an in-person company that believes in the value of hybrid flexibility. We’ve found that being in-office strengthens culture, fosters team connection, and supports creative problem-solving. Our approach is designed to preserve those benefits while giving leaders the ability to find the right cadence that works for their team.
Our general guidance is that we expect Rioters to come into the office at least a few times a month with senior leaders held to a higher expectation. From there, each team leader should find the right rhythm and balance that works for their team by designing rituals around these expectations to ensure in-office time is as impactful as possible.
Ultimately, what matters is that we’re present when we need to deliver for players. As you go through the recruiting process, your Riot recruiter and/or hiring manager can give you more context on existing expectations specific to the team you’re applying for.
FAQ
Can I live anywhere I want?
For tax purposes, Rioters must live in the same state (or country, for offices outside the U.S.) as their home office. However, no matter where Rioters choose to live, they must be able to travel into the office when needed.
How does team-based flexibility work in practice?
It really varies from team to team. Take the Riftbound team, for example. Every three months, a new Riftbound set is released. A key part in the final design period of each set is the Rapid Iteration Breaking & Balancing Investigation Team (or RIBBIT). During a week-long RIBBIT, Riftbound devs come together in Los Angeles to spend each day playtesting and providing feedback. In the morning, the previous day's feedback is incorporated, changes are made, and adjusted cards are printed. RIBBITs make use of in-person collaboration to unlock rapid iteration, provide designers robust feedback at a crucial moment, and create an opportunity to bring devs together helping cement the culture of the team.
How often do team leaders change in-office expectations?
While leaders have the flexibility to make changes when appropriate, those decisions are deeply considered and do not happen on a whim. Any potential changes would come with clear communication and enough time for Rioters to adjust to new expectations.
Are there any fixed, company-wide in-office days?
Nope. You’ll certainly find our offices around the world particularly busy during times like Thunderdome, townhalls, cultural celebrations, and Riot vs. Riot gaming tournaments. Participation in these events is certainly encouraged, but it’s not required. You’ll probably get FOMO though.
Is this approach true for every Riot office?
This approach absolutely extends across all our offices. It’s actually one of the main reasons why a one-size-fits-all policy didn’t work for us. Leaders in each office can adjust in-office expectations based on team needs, cultural norms, or ongoing projects.
For example, our Sydney office asks teams to come in at least once a week, with many teams choosing Thursday so everyone overlaps. Your recruiter can share more about expectations at the office you will be working out of.
Are there core hours or expectations for availability?
There are no company-wide core hours. Specific expectations may vary by team and role, so we recommend discussing this with your hiring manager during the interview process.
Can I work remotely temporarily for things like family needs or traveling?
Temporary remote arrangements can be considered on a case-by-case basis. We encourage you to discuss your situation with your HRBP and manager to find a solution that works for both you and the team.
Is relocation support provided if I need to move closer to the office?
Relocation support may be available depending on the role and hiring circumstances. Your recruiter will be able to share more details based on your specific situation.
